Food Scrap Challenge

70% of what we throw away in Alameda County could be composted or recycled70% of what we throw away in Alameda County could be composted or recycledHouseholds in Alameda County send over 120, treat 000 tons of food scraps to the landfill each year. Food scraps and food soiled paper represent nearly 40% of all material sent to landfill in Alameda County every year. Food scraps in the landfill take up valuable space and generate harmful greenhouse gasses.

You can help by taking the Food Scrap Challenge and pledging to reduce the amount of food waste you send to the dump by using the green bin to keep food scraps out of the landfill.

When we use our green bins, food scraps are sent to nearby composting centers to be turned into compost and soil that helps grow more healthy California food.
